LIFT optimises Rome station pedestrian flows with Oasys MassMotion in under 10 hours

The customer, LIFT (Railway and Traffic Engineering Laboratory S.r.l.), faced the challenge of optimally sizing pedestrian transit spaces within a high-traffic railway station in Rome to ensure efficient passenger flow. They partnered with the vendor Oasys Software, utilizing its Oasys MassMotion pedestrian experience design software alongside ESTECO's modeFRONTIER optimisation tool to address specific station bottlenecks.

Oasys provided a solution by integrating MassMotion with modeFRONTIER to run over 5,000 automated simulations, which explored a vast number of design configurations in less than 10 hours. This process identified the minimum area required for adequate pedestrian flow, allowing for optimal station design. The results enabled LIFT to determine the impacts of increased traffic and ensure a specific level of service, ultimately freeing up surplus space for alternative uses.
