King’s Cross station redevelopment – roof analysis and design using Oasys GSA

Arup worked with Oasys Software on the King’s Cross station redevelopment in London, where the team needed to design the Western Concourse roof. The challenge was to create a long-span, elegant roof that bridged over the London Underground ticket hall, avoided loading the Western Range façade, fit within the Great Northern Hotel curve, and supported the station’s role as a major transport hub.

Using Oasys GSA for structural analysis and design, Arup developed the roof diagrid and funnel with a parametric approach, checked global and local buckling, and refined the key node connections through 3D finite element analysis. Oasys Software helped deliver an efficient, lightweight roof with hidden connections, unified connection types, and a clean curving geometry, while the funnel’s tree-trunk columns were designed to resist very large forces, including radial forces of up to 600 tonnes.
