Enhancing user experience with Foster + Partners’ South Sabah Al-Ahmad Masterplan proximity analysis in Oasys MassMotion

Foster + Partners, a global architecture and design firm, faced the challenge of planning the new South Sabah Al-Ahmad City in Kuwait with a focus on resident wellbeing and sustainable, high-density living. Accelerated by the need to model social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic, their specific challenge was to analyze pedestrian movement and proximity within the city's neighborhoods and open spaces to ensure a positive user experience. They utilized Oasys MassMotion software to investigate this.

Oasys provided the solution through the proximity analysis feature in its MassMotion software. This allowed the Foster + Partners design team to run simulations showing how people would move within two meters of each other, testing various mitigation scenarios against client-provided population data. The measurable result was the finding that extending shaded canopies to pavements would reduce the time users spent in close proximity by 50%. Using Oasys MassMotion enabled the team to effectively evaluate design strategies and clearly portray their data-driven findings to the client.
