Case Study: Webb Yates Engineers cuts stadium roof truss weight with Oasys GSA

A Oasys Software Case Study

Automated stadium roof truss optimisation using Oasys GSA

Webb Yates Engineers used Oasys Software’s GSA to design a stadium roof truss with a 29-meter cantilever and 13.7-meter back span. Although the roof geometry had already been fixed, the team wanted to reduce the structure’s embodied carbon, especially since the same truss would be repeated throughout the stadium, multiplying any material savings.

Using an Oasys GSA parametric model in Grasshopper, the engineers were able to quickly test different truss geometries and section sizes with live analysis feedback and the Galapagos Solver. Oasys Software’s workflow helped them identify a more efficient arrangement that reduced weight by up to 30% in initial optimisation runs, including a redesign from 22 steel members to 20 members, while still meeting deflection constraints.
