Arup improves Grand Central passenger flow for 400,000 daily riders with Oasys Software

Arup, a global engineering firm, was challenged with improving passenger flow and the overall user experience at the heavily trafficked Grand Central-42nd Street Subway Station in New York City for the MTA's Enhanced Station Initiative program. To assess future performance and design improvements, Arup utilized Oasys MassMotion, a pedestrian and crowd simulation software, to model human movement and identify areas of congestion.

Oasys MassMotion was the core component of a multi-disciplinary solution that integrated architectural, lighting, wayfinding, and acoustic designs into a single 3D immersive and Virtual Reality model. This allowed Arup's designers to visually and audibly experience the future station from a passenger's point of view before construction began. The solution enabled the team to test and adjust wayfinding signage for effectiveness, resulting in a holistic design aimed at improving flow and safety for the station's 400,000 daily passengers.
