Arup designs King’s Cross roof with Oasys Software, handling 600-tonne radial forces

Arup, a global engineering firm, faced significant structural challenges during the redevelopment of London's King's Cross station. Their task was to design a long-span roof that bridged over an existing underground station without applying loads to a historic façade, all while creating an efficient, elegant, and visually appealing structure. To meet this challenge, Arup utilized structural analysis software from Oasys Software, specifically Oasys GSA.

Using Oasys GSA, Arup implemented a parametric design approach to analyze and finalize the complex roof diagrid and funnel. The software enabled them to check for global and local buckling under extreme loads and to optimize the design of critical connection nodes. This analysis from Oasys Software resulted in an efficient, clean, and lightweight structure with hidden connections that preserved the curving geometry, successfully meeting all design and operational requirements.
