Arup - Customer Case Study

Arup, the prime design consultant for New York's Fulton Center transport hub, faced the challenge of designing a station to efficiently handle up to 300,000 daily passengers. The project required integrating nine historic subway lines, simplifying passenger transfers, and resolving complex spatial conflicts without impeding train services. To analyze pedestrian movement and ensure safety, Arup turned to its own software subsidiary, Oasys, and utilized its MassMotion 3D pedestrian simulation tool.

Oasys's MassMotion software allowed Arup to create a detailed 3D model populated with virtual people to simulate movement and identify potential bottlenecks. The solution analyzed and optimized passenger flow, which significantly reduced train dwell times at the platforms by mitigating crowds. This provided major network efficiencies for the MTA and NYCT; saving just 30 seconds per train across the 1.3 million daily passengers on one line alone translated into a substantial annual value for the community. Oasys's tools were fundamental in delivering a more streamlined and effective design.
