Arup’s geotechnical team needed a way to assess tunnel-induced settlement impacts on thousands of nearby assets and utilities across a very large infrastructure project, where traditional numerical approaches risked software overload and crashes. They turned to Oasys Software and its XDisp product to handle the scale and complexity of the impact assessment under tight time constraints.

Oasys Software helped Arup automate the workflow by building asset-specific models with a Python script, using a master model and construction staging data to calculate longitudinal impacts in XDisp. The team ran more than 5,000 construction stages and used the results to pinpoint where lower volume loss was needed to control settlement, improving the utility schedule. Oasys Software’s approach gave Arup a faster, more efficient way to assess tunnelling-induced movement, and showed that a fixed 0.5-inch settlement limit was not appropriate everywhere because asset failure thresholds varied by location.
