With Nutanix, California Office of Emergency Services Supports Remote Office Operations Seamlessly

The California Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) oversees emergency planning and response across the state with about 1,250 staff, contractors and volunteers and roughly 100 small remote offices. Cal OES needed a compact, building-block virtual compute and storage solution to support a 4 TB SQL deployment and reduce datacenter footprint and power use, but traditional blade servers and SANs were too large, noisy and costly for small sites and larger locations alike.

Cal OES deployed Nutanix appliances (NX-1000/2000) — a converged hardware-and-software platform with SSD-based tiering, SAN-free architecture and unified management — to virtualize remote offices and consolidate SQL and other services. Deployment was quick and easy; results included a 75% reduction in datacenter rack space (17U to 4U), ~50% improvement in IOPS, ~50% power savings, ~25% CAPEX reduction, improved disaster survivability and simplified central management.
