A Nutanix Case Study
Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which serves about 450,000 people across three hospitals, faced rising support costs and performance limits from an ageing integrated hardware platform just as clinical care was becoming increasingly data‑intensive (more PACS imaging and video). With patient administration, imaging and other critical systems relying on always‑available on‑prem data centres, the Trust needed a flexible, hyperconverged solution to avoid disruptive five‑year refresh cycles and to improve reliability and scalability.
The Trust implemented a Nutanix hyperconverged platform via bare‑metal installs and a dual‑data‑centre, synchronous replication design, enabling non‑disruptive, incremental capacity growth by adding nodes. Since deployment they’ve migrated roughly 70% of workloads (about 250 VMs), freed up ~200 legacy servers, and currently host ~15 TB of data with plans to grow to 40 TB. The move delivered faster implementation, simplified management, better resource visibility, lower licensing and support costs, and responsive vendor support, with the Trust now evaluating further Nutanix capabilities.
