Washington Health Benefit Exchange Meets Affordable Care Act Targets by Building on Nutanix Platform

The Washington Health Benefit Exchange, created to run Washington Healthplanfinder and meet Affordable Care Act requirements, had to build an online marketplace quickly on a limited budget. With about 120 staff (half in IT) and startup funding that needed to be stretched, the Exchange needed a small‑footprint, high‑availability compute and storage platform to support VDI, SQL Server and other business applications while enabling rapid deployment and growth.

The Exchange deployed Nutanix Virtual Computing Platform (NX‑2000 and NX‑3000 series) in November 2012 and now runs two systems supporting ~30 virtual servers and ~200 virtual desktops. The converged platform delivered up to 40% lower cost than alternatives, one‑morning installation, zero hardware‑related downtime, faster provisioning, strong VDI performance and seamless software updates—allowing a small IT team to manage a dynamic online exchange efficiently.
