A Nutanix Case Study
The University of Reading needed a more agile, scalable and cost-effective way to support unpredictable, high‑demand research workloads that routinely require hundreds of VMs and terabytes of storage on short notice. Legacy servers, siloed storage and rising virtualization licensing costs made provisioning slow and labor-intensive, and the team wanted a secure, self‑service solution that could be shared equitably across research groups.
They consolidated to an on‑premise Nutanix Enterprise Cloud on Dell EMC XC, moved to the AHV hypervisor, and adopted Nutanix Files and the Prism self‑service portal (with Calm planned for hybrid bursting). The result was fast, simple scaling and automation—10 nodes added and 400 TB configured in minutes during migration—up to 16:1 data reduction, lower licensing and management costs, reliable backups to Azure, and a self‑service research cloud that freed IT staff and drove strong user uptake.
