The University of York Modernises IT by Jettisoning Legacy Systems and Embracing Nutanix HCI

The University of York, a research-intensive Russell Group university with over 20,000 students and 5,000 staff, needed to modernise an ageing datacentre. End-of-life NetApp filers and a three-tier architecture were causing performance, scaling and cost issues across mixed workloads, and budget pressures meant the university wanted a more flexible, resilient and low‑maintenance platform.

York chose Nutanix hyper-converged infrastructure, migrating key workloads over a two- to three-year programme to consolidate compute, storage, networking and management while keeping hybrid cloud options. The result was “blisteringly fast” performance, denser utilisation with lower maintenance and reduced need for specialist skills, plus improved resilience and ongoing vendor support—delivering a replacement for legacy systems and greater flexibility for future needs.
