A Nutanix Case Study
Hastings & Prince Edward Counties Health Unit, a public health agency serving about 150,000 people in Eastern Ontario, struggled with a slow, hard-to-scale VDI environment running VMware Horizon on blade servers and a SAN. Daily boot storms and antivirus scans caused severe I/O bottlenecks, the aging hardware was out of warranty, and the IT team needed greater performance, capacity, simpler management and enterprise-grade uptime ahead of a datacenter move.
The Health Unit deployed a Nutanix Virtual Computing Platform (initially an NX-1350 three-node cluster, later expanded to four nodes) to host 200 virtual desktops. Deployment was fast and simple, management moved to Nutanix Prism, and the environment now delivers at least 50% faster desktop performance and 50% faster image recomposes, a 6:1 reduction in rack space (12U to 2U), lower power/cooling needs, no downtime and supportable by a two-person team.
