Nutanix Enterprise Cloud Platform Delivers More Than Expected at Chesterfield Royal Hospital

Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, a 3,900‑staff acute provider serving over 400,000 people, was constrained by an ageing three‑tier infrastructure and shrinking storage capacity. Reliance on VMware’s limited free ESXi, multiple backup tools and disparate management interfaces left the IT team overstretched and unable to scale to meet growing clinical and administrative demands within strict NHS budgets.

Following an open tender, the trust deployed the Nutanix Enterprise Cloud Platform with partner COOLSPIRiT, migrating workloads and using Nutanix AHV on the failover cluster plus Commvault for backup. The move virtualized all remaining servers, increased VMs from ~280 to 340+ without performance issues, provided active/active failover and license savings, centralized management via Prism, and delivered clear datacentre gains—about 60% fewer racks, 55% lower cooling and roughly two years of additional storage headroom.
