National Blood Authority stems AUD$10 million blood wastage with Nutanix

The National Blood Authority (NBA) manages the supply of four million units of blood and blood products worth about A$1.2 billion each year and depends on real‑time access to critical systems like BloodNet and BloodSTAR. A legacy thick‑client desktop environment suffered performance degradation, limited remote access for travelling staff and risked interruptions to the blood supply chain — issues that could have led to significant blood wastage and operational delays.

Working with Qirx, NBA deployed a VDI solution (VMware vSphere and Horizon View) running on Nutanix NX1050 appliances and managed with Nutanix Prism. The converged platform consolidated the data centre, restored reliable anytime/anywhere access, cut maintenance time by roughly 50%, saved staff about 34 minutes per week, delivered a full ROI within five months and helped prevent up to A$10 million a year in potential blood wastage.
