Nashville Wire Transitions to SAN-Free Datacenter to Achieve Simplicity and Cost Reduction

Nashville Wire Products, a Nashville-based manufacturer of welded wire and retail/display fixtures, was facing the end of a lease on a complex IBM blade-and-SAN environment that was costly to operate and difficult to manage. The existing setup required numerous firmware updates, LUN/datastore provisioning and Fibre Channel plumbing, introduced a steep learning curve, and even led to system crashes—prompting the IT team to seek a simpler, more cost-effective datacenter solution.

They implemented a 4-node Nutanix NX-2000 converged platform and migrated production workloads (SQL, Exchange, Active Directory, vCenter, file servers and terminal services) over a weekend. The result was single-GUI management, lower initial cost and much smaller power/rack footprint (83% less space and significantly reduced power), improved application performance and user satisfaction, and subsequent expansion with a 3-node NX-3000 to support future growth.
