How UEGCL's Technology Transformation Is Electrifying Uganda's Future

Uganda Electricity Generation Company Limited (UEGCL) is the state-owned generator that operates major hydropower plants along the Nile, including the 183 MW Isimba plant. Facing gaps in post-construction maintenance, asset management and sustainability—and constrained by government limits on public cloud use—UEGCL sought IT autonomy and a robust platform to support CMMS-driven maintenance, ERP and databases. The selection and deployment also had to contend with COVID-19–era logistics.

UEGCL implemented a Nutanix private cloud (converged compute, storage and virtualization) with two four-node clusters (primary and disaster-recovery) to host IBM Maximo–based CMMS, ERP and other critical systems. The solution cut hardware and cooling footprints, enabled rapid application deployment (under 30 minutes), centralized management, decommissioned legacy kit, and delivered scalability and resilience—yielding estimated infrastructure cost savings of 70–80% and a full rollout completed within six months with local partner support.
