Case Study: Elenia achieves increased scalability and agility for mission-critical SCADA with Nutanix

A Nutanix Case Study

Elenia Builds a Smarter Power Distribution Grid with Nutanix Invisible Infrastructure

Elenia, a Finnish electricity distribution group serving over 417,000 customers across more than 100 municipalities, faced a pressing IT challenge: its mission‑critical SCADA application ran on aging rack servers and storage that were nearing end of life. The team needed to virtualize the SCADA stack, modernize hardware to improve resilience and manageability, and ensure tight integration with VMware and single‑pane management while meeting strict availability and legacy protocol requirements.

Elenia implemented Nutanix’s hyperconverged XCP platform (NX appliances) with VMware, migrating the SCADA system onto virtual servers. The new infrastructure delivered rapid provisioning, vastly improved scalability and agility, and higher availability (surviving host failures) while reducing rack footprint, power and cooling needs. The environment is now managed in‑house by existing staff, the platform has proven reliable in testing, and Elenia plans to extend Nutanix to other systems.
