A Nutanix Case Study
Coleg Gwent, one of Wales’s largest further education colleges with over 23,000 students and 1,500 staff, was struggling with an ageing “server + SAN” infrastructure. Outdated Fibre Channel SANs caused backup failures and capacity headaches, the number of supported VMs had hit its limit, and critical SQL databases remained on physical hosts—leading to frequent day-to-day IT issues and concerns about data resilience and integrity.
The college selected Nutanix (implemented by partner Eurotech) to replace its legacy stack with an Enterprise Cloud Platform running on NX-3000 clusters and VMware, managed via Nutanix Prism. The solution was installed in two days, consolidated three data centres into two and cut rack footprint from 42U to 8U per site. Storage problems disappeared, SQL workloads were virtualized, the cluster was easily expanded for new applications, and the college gained better performance, simplified management, lower power/cooling costs and elimination of Fibre Channel licensing overheads.
