Cochise County Virtualizes with Web-Scale IT and Hyper-V

Cochise County, Arizona — serving about 132,000 residents — needed to replace roughly 50 aging physical servers that hosted its critical public- safety and business applications. With limited IT staff, the county sought a cost-effective, high-performance virtualization solution that avoided the complexity and expense of traditional SANs while supporting SQL Server and other mission‑critical workloads.

The county deployed two Nutanix NX‑3000 systems (two nodes each) running Windows Server 2012 R2 with Hyper‑V, leveraging Nutanix’s web‑scale architecture (NDFS, local SSDs, automated tiering) over 10GbE. The move consolidated core apps (SQL Server, SCCM, file/print and web services) onto a highly available, easily managed platform, reduced racks from six to one, cut power and cooling by about 80%, improved performance and lowered operational costs.
