Calgary Catholic School District Learns to Rely on Nutanix

Calgary Catholic School District (CCSD), Alberta’s largest Catholic district serving over 52,000 students across 105 schools, faced an aging virtual infrastructure built on HP blades, NetApp SANs and VMware vSphere supporting more than 270 VMs. With only two IT staff managing widely dispersed operations, CCSD needed to modernize, simplify management, shrink its physical footprint and cut rising colocation and licensing costs.

CCSD piloted and then migrated its entire production environment to Nutanix NX‑3000 systems using Nutanix Prism and the built‑in AHV hypervisor, adding a second system for growth. The move reduced four full racks to half a rack (saving thousands CAD per month in colo fees), eliminated vSphere licensing (saving over CAD 100K/year), removed the need for a dedicated storage/virtualization admin, cut latencies to single digits, and shortened a key HR report from eight hours to 45 minutes.
