Black Hills Energy ReEnergizes IT with Nutanix Enterprise Cloud and AHV

Black Hills Energy, which serves about 1.2 million gas and electric customers across eight states, was struggling with an aging VDI infrastructure: Citrix XenDesktop running on traditional servers and SANs and a competitor hypervisor that caused instability, frequent outages, and high management overhead. The team also wanted better, US-based support and easier compliance for regulated utility systems.

Following a successful POC, Black Hills deployed Nutanix Enterprise Cloud and migrated to the native AHV hypervisor across active‑active datacenters, consolidating VDI, call-center, and utility workloads. The move delivered faster deployments and single‑console management, cut monthly image-update time from up to 16 hours to minutes, improved stability and reliability for roughly 1,800 users, and provided responsive US‑based support.
