BART Switches to Nutanix Enterprise Cloud

SF Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART), the public transit system serving San Francisco and the East Bay, struggled with an aging 3‑tier infrastructure that was hard to scale, slow to deploy and complex to procure—problems that culminated in a catastrophic EMC SAN failure. Facing regulatory constraints that limited public cloud use and the need to modernize finance, HR, maintenance and police applications, BART sought a simpler, higher‑performance solution that would reduce risk and operational overhead.

BART deployed Nutanix hyperconverged systems (starting with NX nodes and Nutanix Prism for management) for VDI, a private cloud and Oracle virtualization. The move cut deployment time from months to days, migrated tens of terabytes quickly, reduced CapEx by about 30% and halved the required IT staff. Additional benefits included a 3x reduction in data center footprint and power, 25–30% faster project delivery, stronger visibility and easier DR—allowing BART to restore operations rapidly during outages and focus IT on services instead of infrastructure.
