Backup and Recovery Platform Refresh Improves Availability and Efficiency for a Public Utility

Taunton Municipal Lighting Plant (TMLP) is a municipal electric utility serving about 38,000 customers in southeastern Massachusetts that also provides internet and network services. Facing a seven‑year‑old datacenter that couldn’t meet the performance and availability demands of a new ERP system and modern operational technology, the seven‑person IT team needed a simpler, more reliable, and scalable infrastructure to reduce lengthy recovery times and administrative overhead across three datacenter locations.

TMLP deployed the Nutanix Enterprise Cloud Platform and Nutanix Mine with HYCU in a staged rollout (generation plant first, then corporate), with vendor engineers supporting the weekend cutover and remote backup buildout. The result: dramatically improved RTOs (generation plant recovery improved roughly fivefold; corporate RTO dropped from 24–48 hours to about 2 hours), a 90% reduction in data‑refresh turnaround, increased safety and redundancy, and operational savings including ~50% lower licensing/maintenance costs and ~60% less rack space—freeing the small IT team to focus on business‑driven initiatives.
