Clif Bar Grows Assortment and Strengthens Retailer Relationships with Numerator Insights

Clif Bar & Company, the American family- and employee-owned natural and organic foods company, faced growing competition in the nutrition bar category and needed to better understand why shoppers at key retailers were buying Clif Bar products elsewhere. To uncover the causes of this leakage and strengthen retailer relationships, Clif Bar used Numerator Insights and Numerator Survey.

With Numerator, Clif Bar analyzed shopper behavior through Leakage Tree and Shopper Metrics reports, then launched a targeted purchase-based shopper survey to validate the findings. The insights showed that only 20% of Clif Bar buyers shopping at one retailer were actually purchasing the brand there, with many buying multipacks elsewhere; 45% of survey respondents were likely to spend more on Clif Bar items. Armed with this data, Clif Bar convinced retailers to expand assortment and shelf space for Clif Bar multipacks, leading to solid growth and an estimated half-million-dollar gain for every point of improvement.
