UPMC boosts virtualized application deployment speed with SDN

The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), a $11 billion health‑care system with more than 62,000 employees, 21 hospitals and 450+ sites supported by two data centers over an MPLS core, faced a major networking challenge as roughly 90% of its applications became virtualized. The network, designed for a non‑virtualized environment, became a bottleneck that slowed application deployment and threatened operational agility, so UPMC turned to Nuage Networks and its Virtualized Services Platform (VSP) SDN solution.

Nuage Networks deployed VSP to provide a hypervisor‑agnostic, software‑defined overlay that integrated with UPMC’s VMware, Cisco Nexus switches and Juniper firewalls and is built on the Nokia SR OS codebase. The Nuage solution automated network configuration via an intuitive GUI, enabled QoS and east‑west traffic policies across data centers, and reduced error‑prone manual tasks—resulting in dramatically faster application deployment, increased operational simplicity and agility, better application QoS, and improved quality of healthcare provisioning.
