Liquid-Cooled Cold Plate for Automotive Power Electronics with Shark-Inspired Flow Guides

Puntozero, working with Dynamis PRC on a Formula SAE Electric race car, needed to redesign the cold plate cooling the power electronics to improve flow uniformity, increase heat transfer surface area, and reduce weight for additive manufacturing. They used nTopology’s generative and Field‑Driven design software to tackle these DfAM challenges and manage the complexity of the redesign.

Using nTopology, Puntozero generated shark‑inspired gyroid flow guides and a variable‑thickness diamond TPMS external lattice, then additively manufactured the part in m4p PureAl on an EOS M 290 and verified it by CT scan (<200 μm deviation). The nTopology‑enabled solution reduced weight by 25%, increased heat transfer surface area by 300% (3×), and delivered high‑velocity, uniform fluid flow with powder‑free channels.
