KW Micro Power cuts microturbine housing weight by 44% with nTopology

KW Micro Power, a designer and manufacturer of high-power-density auxiliary power units for aerospace and defense, faced the challenge of creating a lighter microturbine generator housing with more efficient thermal management. To achieve this, they partnered with nTop to redesign the critical component for additive manufacturing.

Using nTop's field-driven design approach and simulation tools, the team created a lightweight, hollow housing with integrated conformal cooling channels. The solution, manufactured by VELO3D, resulted in a 44% reduction in weight and a 33% drop in operating temperature. This allowed the use of a more cost-effective material and enabled the housing to perform three functions in a single part.
