Agile Industrial Robot Grippers with Topology Optimization & Metal 3D Printing

Additive Italia srl worked with Preziosa Francesco SRL to solve a costly production bottleneck: custom robotic grippers for a press-brake bending cell had long CNC lead times that threatened the utilization of an expensive automated system. To address this, Additive Italia srl leveraged metal 3D printing and nTopology’s software—using topology optimization and reusable design workflows—to rapidly create manufacturing-ready gripper designs.

Using nTopology’s topology optimization and automated workflows, Additive Italia srl produced lattice-textured, slender grippers optimized for 3D printing and built them on a Desktop Metal Studio System. The result: a final design ready in 4 days (vs. ~2 weeks), 32–40% weight reduction, ~35% cost savings compared to outsourcing, improved system reliability, elimination of the supply-chain bottleneck, and enabled lights-out manufacturing. nTopology’s tools made those gains repeatable through reusable design processes.
