Routing DealNews Shoppers Based on Pulsar’s Real-Time Latency Measurements Gets Consistently Better Performance than Georouting

DealNews, a leading deal site used by about 16 million shoppers monthly, needed to ensure a fast, reliable experience after consolidation of domains and a major DDoS-related DNS outage exposed weaknesses in its georouting strategy. The Ops team found IP-to-geography routing increasingly inaccurate (they estimated georouting was wrong 20–30% of the time) and wanted a solution that guaranteed availability, resiliency and the fastest performance for users on any network or device.

By deploying NS1’s Managed DNS with Pulsar, DealNews began routing visitors to the optimal data center based on real-time latency rather than geographic proximity, with built-in analytics and automatic adjustments for congestion or datacenter issues. The change delivered immediate gains: roughly half of traffic saw at least a 10% improvement in DNS response times, another one-third improved by about 30%, and a small portion experienced up to 200% faster responses—allowing DealNews to measure “close” in milliseconds, not miles.
