Using AI to de-risk delivery and build trust with passengers during the Transpennine Route Upgrade project

The Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) program faced the challenge of de-risking its £10.7 billion railway transformation while managing planned service disruptions and protecting its reputation with public and political stakeholders. To move beyond traditional, slow, and biased risk management, TRU engaged nPlan to supercharge its process with AI-led schedule risk analysis (AI-SRA) using the nPlan Insights Pro platform.

nPlan’s AI analyzed TRU’s project schedules to forecast timelines and identify potential delays with unprecedented speed and scale. This enabled TRU to run 80 risk analyses in six months, a task that would have taken 3.5 years manually, and to mitigate risks on critical track possessions, potentially avoiding £5 million in additional costs. By providing data-driven insights, nPlan gave TRU the continuous assurance needed to make confident final investment decisions and keep the massive project on track.
