Case Study: a generic client company prevents retail theft of disc media with NOVO Engineering’s RFID-activated lock mechanism

A NOVO Engineering Case Study

NOVO’s Client Company deploys RFID lock for DVD media with NOVO Engineering to stop theft and inventory shrinkage

NOVO's Client Company, a major retailer, faced significant losses from organized theft and shoplifting of media products like DVDs and CDs. They engaged NOVO Engineering to develop an anti-theft security device using their proprietary RFID technology. The challenge was to create an extremely inexpensive, miniaturized lock mechanism that could be integrated into standard packaging and withstand physical, thermal, or RF attacks to render stolen goods useless.

NOVO Engineering developed a novel, robust electromechanical lock using shape-memory alloy wire. Their solution minimized power consumption and was designed for manufacturability on existing SMT assembly lines. The final locking mechanism was seamlessly integrated into product packaging, allowing for individual RFID identification and inventorying. Any attempt to defeat the lock resulted in the destruction of the media, successfully preventing theft and the fraudulent return of stolen goods.
