A NOSIGNER Case Study
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government faced the challenge of effectively communicating critical disaster preparedness information to its 6.6 million households. The content was historically perceived as unappealing and failed to resonate, making it difficult to transform public awareness and safety culture. To address this, they engaged the design firm NOSIGNER to create a new disaster prevention handbook.
NOSIGNER designed and edited "TOKYO BOSAI," a 330-page book that used engaging, multi-generational design elements like a distinctive yellow-and-black hazard color scheme, a mascot character, flipbook animations, and illustrations from popular artists. The solution was a massive success, with 8.03 million copies distributed. It won a Good Design Gold Award and fundamentally revolutionized disaster prevention communication in Japan, creating a new visual standard and fostering a national movement that continues to share its information during disasters.
