In silico advancing battery chemistry through supercomputer simulation

Northvolt, a battery manufacturer, sought to accelerate fundamental research into new battery chemistries, specifically to optimize electrolyte formulations. Their challenge was that traditional laboratory experimentation for this kind of research is costly, complex, lengthy, and offers limited insight. Northvolt gained access to the Vega supercomputer through an allocation of processing hours.

The solution implemented by Northvolt was to conduct experiments in silico, using the immense processing power of the Vega supercomputer to run molecular dynamics simulations. This approach removed the physical constraints of lab testing, allowing Northvolt to run multiple complex experiments in parallel, explore hypothetical compounds, and gain greater insight faster. This project served as a valuable proof of concept for Northvolt, demonstrating a powerful new simulation-based R&D workflow to advance higher-performance, sustainable battery solutions.
