Case Study: Stena Line reduces ferry emissions with Northvolt battery hybrid technology

A Northvolt Case Study

Preview of the Stena Line Case Study

Hybrid and battery-powered ferries at Stena Line

Stena Line, a leading European ferry company, sought to reduce its environmental footprint. In partnership with Northvolt, they aimed to explore the use of battery power to advance cleaner ferry operations, driven by sustainability goals, customer demand, and upcoming regulations.

Northvolt's involvement supported the implementation of a hybrid power solution. Stena Line installed a 1 MWh lithium-ion NMC battery system on its ferry, the Jutlandica. This Northvolt-enabled system reduced generator usage, saving approximately 500 tons of fuel and cutting 1,500 tons of CO2 emissions annually. The project is the first step in a larger plan to expand battery capacity and introduce a fully electric ship by 2030.
