Driving the shift Scania’s new battery assembly plant

Scania, a leading manufacturer of heavy-duty trucks, faced the challenge of electrifying its fleet and achieving its sustainability goal of 50% electric sales by 2030. To power its new generation of electric regional long-haul trucks, it required a high-performing, low-carbon battery solution, which it sought through its partnership with vendor Northvolt.

Northvolt worked closely with Scania to jointly develop a high-performance battery cell produced with fossil-free electricity. The solution featured a cell with a carbon footprint approximately one-third lower than the industry standard, designed specifically for heavy commercial vehicles. The implementation of these Northvolt cells into Scania's new, highly automated assembly plant enabled the efficient production of battery packs, supporting the rapid acceleration of Scania's electrification plans.
