A Nomad Digital Case Study
Xorail — a Wabtec company and one of the U.S.'s leading railway signal design and construction firms — faced the challenge of providing secure, highly redundant train‑to‑wayside connectivity for the new Denver Eagle P3 Commuter Rail Service (adding over 40 km of routes). Xorail needed a solution to support critical systems including Positive Train Control (PTC), Passenger Emergency Intercom (PEI), CCTV, Maintenance Data System (MDS) and PA/VMS. Nomad Digital was engaged to design and test a WiMAX communications solution, using its CCU router aggregation software to manage traffic across multiple radio routes.
Nomad Digital implemented two private, parallel trackside radio networks with multiple onboard radios and redundant routers, enabling automatic failover and resilient routing. Nomad commissioned and tested 68 rail cars, executing failover scenarios to validate system robustness; the WiMAX deployment was completed on the University of Colorado A Line with two additional corridors scheduled, delivering secure, redundant connectivity that reliably supports the required operational applications across the new corridor.
