Case Study: ÖBB achieves world‑first uninterrupted onboard live TV broadcasts with Nomad Digital

A Nomad Digital Case Study

Preview of the OBB Case Study

OBB - Customer Case Study

OBB, Austria’s federal railway operator, wanted to offer passengers live televised events (notably UEFA 2016 football) but faced severe challenges: train Wi‑Fi bandwidth and transient outages (tunnels, low coverage) made individual streaming impractical and costly for customers. Nomad Digital, using its media and infotainment platform and next‑generation 3500P product series, partnered with OBB to explore a resilient live‑TV solution.

Nomad Digital implemented hardware and software in the OBB NOC to ingest ORF broadcasts and deployed upgraded on‑train systems (3500P routers/media blades, 802.11ac access points, gigabit switches, new modems and GPS‑based tech) plus patented on‑train buffering software. The solution enabled a world‑first live TV broadcast to passengers’ devices and carriage PIS screens, delivering uninterrupted viewing through connectivity gaps, improving passenger experience and removing reliance on thousands of individual cellular streams.
