Heathrow Express (HEX) carries around 16,000 passengers a day on the 15-minute non-stop link between London Paddington and Heathrow, but part of the route runs through an 8 km tunnel with very poor cellular coverage. HEX wanted a seamless platform-to-train WiFi experience so business travellers could stay connected from boarding to arrival. Nomad Digital provided the passenger-connectivity expertise, offering a solution based on platform WiFi, WiMAX, 3G and its session-preserving switching technology.

Nomad Digital installed central communications units, access points, WiMAX radios and platform WiFi at three stations across HEX’s 14 trains (61 carriages) in a four-month rollout, extending continuous connectivity through the tunnel and on-board. The result is uninterrupted internet access for millions of passengers (enabling live news and video on Express TV and mobile ticket redemption), and contributed to HEX’s 98% overall satisfaction score in the Autumn 2015 Independent National Passenger Survey.
