A Nokia Case Study
Trafikverket, Sweden's national transportation agency, faced the challenge of modernizing its aging and complex communications infrastructure to support growing demands for mission-critical train signaling, operational applications, and passenger services. Their legacy network, difficult to maintain and composed of outdated technologies, required a transformation to ensure safety, compliance with ERTMS standards, and reduced total cost of ownership. Trafikverket selected vendor Nokia to build a future-proof, nationwide GSM-R and unified IP/MPLS network.
Nokia implemented a comprehensive solution including a geo-redundant GSM-R core network and a multiservice IP/MPLS platform to consolidate all critical services onto a single, highly reliable infrastructure. The results for Trafikverket included a future-proof network with ultra-high reliability, compliance with international safety standards, and a significantly reduced TCO facilitated by a single management platform. The new infrastructure also created new revenue opportunities through the resale of excess network capacity.
