Case Study: Sandvik achieves mining automation and safer underground operations with Nokia 5G

A Nokia Case Study

Preview of the Sandvik Case Study

Sandvik deploys Nokia private 4.9/LTE and 5G technology at the Sandvik underground test mine in Tampere, Finland

Sandvik, a world-leading mining equipment and automation company, faced the challenge of needing ultra-reliable, high-capacity, and low-latency wireless connectivity to enable its advanced digital mining solutions like AutoMine® and OptiMine®. Legacy networks were insufficient for their mission-critical applications, driving the need for a robust private wireless infrastructure. To address this, Sandvik partnered with vendor Nokia.

Nokia implemented its Digital Automation Cloud (DAC) platform, deploying a private 5G standalone network at Sandvik’s test mine. The solution provides the high-performance connectivity needed for applications like autonomous vehicle operation and real-time 4K video for remote control. Initial results from Nokia's network showed promising downlink speeds of around 1 Gbps and an average latency of just over 8 milliseconds, positioning Sandvik to showcase a new range of game-changing, reliable products to its customers.
