A Nokia Case Study
SA Power Networks, the sole electricity distributor in South Australia, faced the challenge of replacing its aging and difficult-to-maintain PDH/SDH communications network. The old infrastructure could not support modern IP-based grid applications like GOOSE and CCTV, nor could it deliver the deterministic Quality of Service required for critical teleprotection services while preparing for future energy demands.
Nokia implemented its IP/MPLS Mission-Critical WAN, utilizing its 7750 and 7705 SAR router families along with the Nokia Network Services Platform. This solution provided a single, converged network that reliably supports all of the utility's communications, including stringent current differential protection. The results include a more reliable network with fewer errors, easier management with end-to-end visibility, and a flexible foundation for future grid expansion, all while minimizing risk during the migration.
