Case Study: OG&E achieves smart grid efficiency and demand savings with Nokia

A Nokia Case Study

Preview of the OG&E Case Study

OG&E’s smart grid revolutionizes network control using Nokia’s multi-tiered IP/MPLS communications network

OG&E, Oklahoma's largest electric utility, faced a growing customer base and rising demand, which threatened to require significant new investment in fossil fuel generation. Its challenge was to defer this investment until 2020 by finding new ways to increase grid capacity and efficiency. To address this, OG&E partnered with Nokia to implement a multi-tiered IP/MPLS communications network.

Nokia's solution integrated a WiMAX and microwave system, providing the advanced monitoring and control needed for distribution automation and smart metering. This allowed OG&E to reduce peak and overall energy demand, leading to an interim demand reduction of 280 MW and projected savings of at least $22 million by 2013. The successful deployment by Nokia enabled OG&E to modernize its grid and reliably defer its fossil fuel investment.
