A Nokia Case Study
The City of Espoo, a municipality in Finland, faced the challenges of growing urbanization, including the need to improve sustainability, public safety, and quality of life. To address this, they partnered with Nokia as part of the LuxTurrim5G research project, which aimed to create a smart city digital backbone and avoid siloed development.
Nokia implemented a 5G-powered urban digital platform using smart street lighting poles equipped with sensors. This solution, featuring Nokia AirScale radio access and an Integrated Operations Center, collects and processes vast amounts of data for a local marketplace, enabling new digital services. The project established Espoo as a benchmark smart city, winning a national innovations award, and created a scalable model that reduces deployment costs through a shared neutral host network.
