Modernized IP backhaul network transforms city & public safety services in Dallas

The City of Dallas, a major municipality in Texas, faced the challenge of modernizing its 40-year-old analog Land Mobile Radio (LMR) network for public safety. The outdated system was unreliable, offered limited interoperability with neighboring jurisdictions, and could not support the migration to new digital standards or future technologies. To solve this, they partnered with Nokia to deploy an IP/MPLS mobile backhaul solution utilizing Nokia 9500 Microwave Packet Radio and other networking products.

Nokia implemented a highly resilient and scalable IP/MPLS microwave network, which was deployed across 34 sites within 12 months. This new infrastructure provided significantly higher bandwidth and capacity, enabling the city to support advanced services like a police body camera program and video surveillance. The solution resulted in substantial monthly savings from reduced leased circuit costs and created a future-proof platform for next-generation services, ensuring 99.999% reliability for first responders.
