A Nokia Case Study
EPB, a publicly owned utility in Chattanooga, sought to create a more resilient and intelligent electricity infrastructure. Their challenge was to improve grid reliability, adjust to changing demand, and give customers more control over their energy usage while preventing rate increases. Partnering with Nokia, they looked to leverage a new fiber optic network, utilizing Nokia's fixed access passive optical networking (PON) to manage their smart grid.
With Nokia's fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) network solutions, EPB implemented a self-healing smart grid that dramatically improved power reliability and operational efficiency. This solution also allowed EPB to offer the community gigabit-speed internet, transforming its business. The results were significant, including the creation of thousands of new jobs, over $860 million in added earnings for the city, and a 7% increase in home values for those with the service, all while helping customers avoid rate increases.
