A Nokia Case Study
China Mobile, specifically its subsidiary CMCC Guangxi, faced the challenge of providing a cost-effective and reliable landslide monitoring system for its customer, the BGIGC Group. Existing methods were either inaccurate in poor weather, difficult to maintain, or expensive to deploy across vast and mountainous expressway networks. To address this, China Mobile partnered with vendor Nokia to implement a solution leveraging the Nokia IMPACT IoT platform.
The implemented solution from Nokia used high-precision wireless sensor nodes connected over a low-power network to an edge computing system for real-time data analysis. This provided accurate landslide detection and early warnings, allowing highways to be closed in time to prevent casualties. Since its 2019 deployment, the system has successfully detected two landslides with no loss of life and has been expanded to multiple provinces. The Nokia solution also significantly reduced the total cost of ownership through its minimal maintenance and ultra-low power consumption.
