Azienda Trasporti Milanesi deploys Nokia intelligent rail solution for enhanced passenger experience

Azienda Trasporti Milanesi (ATM), the public transport operator for Milan's metro, faced the challenge of modernizing its aging TDM communication network. The legacy system could not support the high-bandwidth demands of new applications like public Wi-Fi and advanced video surveillance, nor could it efficiently scale for future metro extensions. ATM partnered with Nokia to transform this infrastructure into a single, converged IP/MPLS network to improve operational efficiency and passenger services without disruption.

Nokia implemented a comprehensive IP/MPLS solution using its OmniSwitch, 7450 Ethernet Service Switch, and 7750 Service Router products. This new multi-service network successfully consolidated numerous applications, including mission-critical SCADA systems, VoIP, and video surveillance from over 2,500 cameras. The results for ATM included enhanced passenger security, significant operational cost reductions, and a future-proof infrastructure that can be easily scaled. Nokia's expertise also ensured a seamless migration with no service interruption and provided ATM with vital training and support.
