Engineering services firm creates digital disruption to better its business

Williams Engineering Canada (WEC), a 40+-year multidisciplinary engineering firm with about 180 employees across Northern and Western Canada, set out to digitally transform to “disrupt themselves” and avoid being overtaken by more digitally-native competitors. Facing limited in-house IT resources and the sudden shift to remote work during COVID-19, WEC needed a scalable process automation solution to standardize workflows, boost productivity, and free staff from routine administrative tasks.

Working with partner Elantis and adopting Nintex (Forms, Workflow and App Studio) on SharePoint, WEC digitized HR and safety processes—starting with vacation requests and expanding to onboarding, training, incident investigations and job hazard assessments—backed by 19 automated workflows and a centralized dashboard. The mobile-enabled solution saves up to 15 minutes per job hazard assessment (thousands of hours annually), improves data accuracy, reporting and compliance, and makes updates fast and easy (e.g., adding COVID fields).
